Traces of a Religious Past

Ireland is changing from a country steeped in the church to one of the most liberal states in Europe. This change is happening in and through the people. As people move forward the landscape stays still, bearing many marks of our country's religious past.

One of these such signs are shrines; many to Mary but not exclusively. Many at churches but these are to be expected. What is unexpected are the shrines which appear in the landscape disconnected from any church. Now left as a monument to our country's religious past.

Over the past few years, I have become fascinated in these shrines, seeking them out and photographing them. Many lie to the west of the Island, were death and faith were coupled for our fishermen out in the wild Atlantic.
